ahh, feels so good to get back to morning sketches. waking up at 530am to do them definitely doesn’t, but once I’m up, yes indeed! for this morning’s, I’m going back to Journey into the INKnown! it’s a space comic that’s totally unscripted and I make up one panel at a time. fun!

mystery sketch theatre!

by finnjohnny
Posted In: finn blogs

I was very happy to get back to the mystery sketch theatre, hosted at A Comic Shop. for those not familiar, it’s a two hours of sketching, progressing from 30 seconds to a solid 15 minutes. without further ado, here are my 30 second sketches.

next up, one minute sketches. like the 30 second sketches, I’m using a new 0.7 Coptic multiliner pen and it feels great!

I think I started hitting my stride with the 5 minute sketches. it might be because I started with blue pencils, to rough out the figure first, then with the 0.7 and 0.2 Copic pens.

next, 10 minute sketches.

and finally, he much awaited contest sketch. tonight’s theme is a cherry pie. now, I was really struggling on how to creatively incorporate her, and ended up with this. other had her popping out of the pie! and thanks to Chibar for giving me that punch line!

and by now, it’s late and I’ve gotten tired.

comic review – Ultimates, Wolverine and the X-Men, X-Men Legacy, X-Men, and Ultimate X-Men

so, let’s start with the comic I enjoyed the most and work our way back. by far, The Ultimates #7 is the winner. The combo team of writer Hickman and artist Ribic was fantastic. now, the only part I didn’t like remains Nick Fury’s character. kinda flat for my tastes. but the story pitting two way advanced civilizations and the Ultimates in the center is fascinating. further, the way Hickman is able to come up creatively such an advanced culture and still make it relatable, is well, ahead of my time.

next, Wolverine and the X-Men #7 continues to surprise me with the fun and unknown artwork of Bradshaw, which reminds me a lot of Arthur Adams. and the paneling he juggles between like three simultaneous storylines is impressive. he’s able to draw the climatic conclusion together like beats on a drum.

X-Men Legacy #263 continues and concludes the Exodus storyline. it’s been mildly entertaining with mild artwork and dialogue. it’s only saving grace was the bit of foreshadowing at the very end that leaves you with that da da dum feeling.

Ultimate X-Men #9, to me, is struggling. it’s like riding off of the momentum from the original Ultimate X-Men line but seems to be just lost. the characters are not very flushed out and it’s like puppets just going through the motions. I can see the strings.

finally, X-Men #26 is just kinda bad. Marvel (if you’re listening) – no more vampires. seriously, I’m in this for mutants, not vampires. the only saving grace here is Deadpool and his awesome humor.

oh yeah, final note, both the ultimate issues came with digital copies! yes, I am liking this trend!

comic review – Age of Apocalypse and Saga

by finnjohnny

20120315-075522.jpg
just bought these two and could not wait to read them!

first up, Age of Apocalypse by Lapham and De La Torre. I have to start off by saying I am a HUGE fan of this entire universe and love the fact that Marvel keeps going back there for such rich stories. and this chapter proves no different. great establishment of characters in a fast paced environment. the art by De La Torre works great with this world too, being more sketchy, scratchy, and just downright more messy. looking forward to the next chapter!

as for Saga, all I had to know was Brian K. Vaughan was writing a alien sci-fi story! and this is my first exposure to the art of Fiona Staples, which lacks the refined style of the other great artists, but still impressed at how she’s able to draw a face repeatedly recognizable. in a day and age where we’re used to identifying a character by their uniform, it’s always refreshing to see art like this. (and I like Fiona’s catchphrase, you can’t make comics without Staples!). the story is twice as long, which is great value for the money, and sets up everything quite nicely. although I was expecting more pure science, I don’t mind the magical elements for now.
