comic review – City of Glass

by finnjohnny
Posted In: finn blogs

the inside cover description states this is one of the “100 most important comics of the century.” if it was, I feel like it was so deep and profound that it went right over my head!

so, the story is about this character that has totally lost his identity and is now living it via various personas. I found the story itself intriguing and by its very nature, was expecting a weird ending.

perhaps the best part of he book was the unique story boarding and story telling via the creative images. not your typical comic book, City of Glass played more like a movie to me where I could visualize the creative flow of the story Paul Auster was telling.

overall, worth the time for the short read, if only to open my mind to more imaginative ways to describe a concept visually.

comic reviews – Moon Knight, Batwoman, X-Men

so, Moon Knight continues to pleasantly surprise me. I mean, I don’t know much about the character’s history but Bendis and Maleev seem to be having lots of creative fun with him. in issue 9, they have a showdown with Count Nefario – umm, who is that? Bendis does a good job hyping up how powerful a villain he is, which helps the gravity of the fight.

Batwoman #6 tied together the storyline so far pretty nicely but what happened to the art?! don’t mean to hate on your art Mr. Haden Blackman but I just isn’t the same as the painted masterpieces of J.H. Williams III. will I stick with it? I’ll give it one more issue…

and lastly, I read X-Men #24. you know how you read the Sunday funnies and the last strip you read is Family Circus and you’re kinda disappointed? well, this felt like that. as much as I like Jubilation Lee, I’m not feeling the vampire storyline about her at all. I like X-Men because they are mutants, not vampires! please, bring back the core team, their interaction, and a villain from the X-Men pantheon.

comic reviews – Amazing Spider-Man #3 and Carnage USA #3

by finnjohnny
Posted In: finn blogs

talk about two totally different comics. Carnage USA continues to delight me in a twisted sort of way. Zeb Wells does a great job bringing in more symbiote characters and leaving me on the edge of every page! and I’m always in awe of Clayton Crain’s paint-like artwork. although every so often, there’s a panel I don’t know what’s going on because of the sheer details and colors. to contrast it, you have Amazing Spider-Man which is light in humor and traditional superhero jabber. and wha?! written by Zeb Wells too?! wow, nice range Mr. Wells. the issue also continues with Joe Madureira’s vein popping art. hmm, wonder what it would be like if he drew an indie comic like Y The Last Man.

by finnjohnny
Posted In: finn blogs

well, here’s a fun little project.  taking inspiration from Phil Noto and his personal rendition of movie posters, i decided to take a crack at a poster for my favorite movies of 2011.  it’s not the most original but it’s a start!  feel free to leave your comments!
